Why I became an editor

I have always enjoyed reading and writing. I became a personal proofreader for friends and family, helping them with personal letters, school assignments, and business documents. When a close friend asked me to be her marketing editor for her small business, I realized that this kind of career would suit me very well. I am an avid reader, a great student, and I have experience with business documents, so I feel confident with my ability to work with creative, academic, and business materials.

Background and experience

I’m a marketing editor for a small business owned by a friend. The work mostly entails text blurbs for social media posts and composition of visual advertisements. I’m also a captioner for McLennan Community College. When a teacher has a deaf or hard of hearing student, I add captions to videos used in class. This can involve transcribing from scratch and editing automated captions for clarity. I’m also in charge of reviewing others’ work and training new hires.

Why I love proofreading and editing

There are people who have great ideas but just can't put those ideas to paper in a way that makes sense. I enjoy being the person that can help those ideas shine through. While my true love is with fiction writing, I have experience with a variety of academic subjects, including psychology, mathematics, geography, art history, and more.

Favorite book:

I grew up reading the Warrior Cats series by Erin Hunter, and those books will always have a place on my shelf.

Hobbies:

I'm a performer with a local business, and we dress up as different children's characters for parties. I love to sing, tell stories, and interact with kids as their favorite characters.

Editing tips:

I read the document first to get a feel for the writing style before going through it more thoroughly, looking for common mistakes and inconsistencies, and then I use the Read Aloud function.
